Last Friday was the third Big Sound at The Great Hall in Toronto. For those of you who are not familiar, it’s definitely one of the better cover bands in the city, focusing on Motown songs, and they consistently draw ~700 people to each show. I was lucky enough to mix the first one back in July and who would have thought the band could get any bigger:
On the stage the band consisted of: Drums, tambourine, a percussion player playing congas and other toys, bass, two guitars, vibraphone, organ, piano, baritone sax, tenor sax, two trombones, trumpet, cello, three violins, and up to six vocalists. Considering we only had a 32 channel console, I think the result was quite good.
We put the string players on in-ear monitors which I think was a great help. Perhaps next time we will go a step further and bring in a console and more IEMs.
